Hope International University is hosting a CollegeTown Preview event TODAY to introduce students to the plans for the expansion project and ask for feedback and ideas. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will also feature free giveaways, music and a special outdoor barbeque lunch provided by Pioneer College Caterers. The HIU basketball and soccer teams are scheduled to participate in interactive activities throughout the event.
CollegeTown is a collaborative project between HIU, Cal State University Fullerton (CSUF), and the City of Fullerton to enhance community identity and offerings by creating a “university without borders.” When complete, the 70-acre development will surround the HIU campus and include new student housing, restaurants, retail stores, a pedestrian mall, a town square and more. The first steps of the renovation are already visible south of Hope’s campus at Commonwealth and Chapman where construction is progressing on University House, a new residential and retail complex.
The CollegeTown Preview event, which coincides with Hope’s Fall Preview Day for prospective students and their families, will give students a chance to win prizes and offer valuable insight on CollegeTown at the same time. Laptops will be set up at the MindMixer booth for students to log on and complete a brief interactive survey about the development plan. In line with CollegeTown’s vision of a community to serve residents’ needs and wants, the survey is designed by MindMixer to be like a virtual town hall. People can log on to vote for ideas and respond to questions and topics such as:
- What kind of retail stores do you want CollegeTown to feature?
- Which food and beverage providers (i.e. Starbucks, Peets, Jamba Juice, Subway, Panda Express) do you prefer?
- How important is pedestrian and bicycle access?
- What type of entertainment and activities (i.e. concerts, performing arts, galleries) would you like to see?
In exchange for taking the ten-minute survey, students will receive a special HIU t-shirt or hat featuring the new University logo. Attendees will also have the chance to walk away with free giveaway prizes. Local groups and organizations will be in attendance as well.
After being unveiled in September 2010, CollegeTown is now in the two year planning phase, during which student feedback is vital. President John L. Derry of Hope International University, President Milton A. Gordon of CSU Fullerton, and the City of Fullerton as well as countless partners and planners are all interested in what students and residents have to say about CollegeTown.
